Michael Jackson – This is it (the movie) – Review

There are some things in life that are a let down, this is one of them. Following all the hype surrounding the movie, I finally got around to watching ‘This Is It’ a full four days after its premier. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t moments of the film I really enjoyed, there were moments of genius from who I would personally consider the ‘King of Pop’. However, there were moments of sheer confusion and disappointment. For example, why did Michael not showcase his moonwalk during his run through of Billy Jean? Having waited for the full length of the film I was expecting to see his last ever moonwalk, but it was never to be seen by the masses. Michael also displayed a strange dress sense when he performed in one clip, in what looked like his pyjamas and a black puffer jacket. They say when you’re the King you can do whatever you please.

A highlight of the movie was undoubtedly Michael’s musical ability, both singing live and performing a beatbox when instructing a musician on the set as to what he was desired him to produce. There was also clearly something about the guy that created a positive energy around him and towards the people he spent time with, something that very few stars can truly achieve. Also, any film that makes an audience sing along in a cinema has got to have something going right about it, right? Maybe it’s time to take this idea to Dragon’s Den – showcasing concerts in cinemas. Thank you very much Theo Paphitis! On the other hand, I’d rather not pay to hear people singing along in the Cinema.

On a separate note, I’d have to say we saw way too much of Kenny Ortega in the film than any of us are interested in.

If the movie was anything to go by, then the show in London would have fulfilled all our expectations and beyond. The question is would Michael have ever been fit enough to perform 50 shows? I personally think he would have realistically completed 10 and would have required a large break before attempting any more.

His death has been a huge loss to the world, but at the same time it should pose many questions about the widespread accessibility of drugs in the US, within the celebrity Hollywood circles.
